On July 13, former French international Patrice Evra was found guilty of abandoning his family by the Nanterre Criminal Court in Hauts-de-Seine, France. He was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years. Evra has appealed the verdict.
The Nanterre prosecutor’s office confirmed that the court found Evra guilty of abandoning his family between May 2021 and September 2023, causing his wife, Sandra Evra, both psychological and material harm. As a result, the court sentenced Evra to 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, with additional temporary detention measures. Additionally, Evra is required to pay Sandra a total of €6,000 in compensation, including €4,000 for psychological damage and €2,000 for legal fees. Evra expressed his dissatisfaction with the verdict and immediately appealed, hoping to defend himself through legal means.
Plaintiff attorney, Nathalie Dubois, stated, “I hope this judgment will make Evra understand that he is not above the law and cannot abandon his wife and children overnight, especially considering they met when they were 15 years old, and she followed him around the world to support his football career.” According to Dubois, the former French international has owed her client a total of €969,000 in alimony since July 2020.
Evra’s lawyer, Jerome Bursican, insisted, “The situation presented by the plaintiff is contested. Mr. Evra has appealed because he provided his wife with an apartment, a house with a swimming pool in the south of France, and lent her nearly €2 million for living expenses, which she refused to return. This is the reason for this trial.”
As of Friday afternoon, Evra and his close circle have not directly responded to media reports.
