Recently, England football legend and current Al-Ettifaq manager Gerrard said in an interview that if Messi could go to the Saudi League and play alongside Ronaldo again, it would be a “dream come true.”
As the two greatest players in football, Messi and Ronaldo have both left European leagues in the past two years, going to the MLS and Saudi League respectively, to start new chapters in their careers. The most epic rivalry in football history seems to have come to an end. However, Gerrard believes that the door to Messi playing in the Saudi League is not closed. He even hopes his club could be a possible destination for the Argentinian legend.
In an interview with beIN SPORTS, Gerrard said: “For me, it would be a dream to have Messi join Al-Ettifaq. He’s an unbelievable player, and he would be a massive asset to the club. I know it’s very difficult to get Messi to move to Saudi now, but you’ve got to dream.”
Gerrard also refused to compare the two legends directly, saying: “Cristiano is a great goalscorer, while Messi is more complete, a more complete team player. I really find it very hard to choose between them. They are both legends.”
This summer, both Ronaldo and Messi represented their national teams in continental competitions. Ronaldo’s Portugal were knocked out in the quarter-finals of the European Championship, while Messi will lead Argentina in their quest to defend their Copa América title.
