Spanish defender Nacho: Thought I might fade out of the national team, but I worked hard and came back

On July 8, Spanish defender and former Real Madrid captain Nacho spoke in an interview about his inclusion in the current European Championship squad for Spain.

Nacho said: “I was shocked when I realized that I was slowly falling out of the coach’s plans, but I eventually accepted it. I had actually considered the possibility of fading out of the national team. But now, I’ve come back through my own hard work. I was at Real Madrid at the time, and I was focused on Real Madrid. When I got the call from the federation, they told me I might be selected. I was ecstatic.”

In addition, Nacho added: “The national team generally doesn’t contact players beforehand. I knew I had made the squad when I saw the news. I was training at the time, and the team’s physiotherapist told me to check the news. I knew I was going to the European Championship. It’s the highest honor for a player to represent their country.”

The 34-year-old Nacho came through the youth ranks at Real Madrid. After breaking into the first team, the Spaniard made 364 appearances for the club, scoring 16 goals and providing 10 assists.

Next season, Nacho will leave Real Madrid to join Saudi Arabian club Al-Qadsiah, where he will wear the number 6 jersey. According to media reports, Nacho signed a two-year contract with Al-Qadsiah, earning an annual salary of around €10 million.
