Premier League clubs embark on carbon reduction plans, Man United flies furthest

BBC has compiled the mileage flown by 20 Premier League clubs for their pre-season tours. Half of the clubs travelled to the United States for friendlies; three clubs travelled to the Far East, while the remaining clubs travelled to Europe and the UK.

Manchester United’s pre-season schedule involved flying nearly 13,000 miles, travelling to Norway, Scotland, and various locations in the United States for matches. Chelsea and Tottenham are also expected to fly over 12,000 miles. In contrast, Everton flew the least, with only one match outside the UK in Ireland.

Some clubs also played matches against neighbouring non-league clubs, which helps provide much-needed revenue, making the football pyramid more sustainable and boosting local economies. Southampton played Eastleigh, West Ham played Dagenham, Villa played Walsall, and Crystal Palace played Crawley.

Tottenham and Newcastle also played an exhibition match in May. Including these flights, the two teams will fly over 30,000 miles, equivalent to more than one lap around the earth, during the off-season for non-competitive matches. Newcastle United and Tottenham are aiming to halve their emissions by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2040, while Manchester United and Chelsea are working on their own reduction plans.
