The Guardian: Villa plan Felix swoop after Diaby sale

According to The Guardian, Aston Villa are planning to sign Joao Felix after selling Moussa Diaby for €60m.

Felix joined Atletico Madrid from Benfica in 2019 for €126m, when he was just a teenager. As Villa prepare for the Champions League, Felix is one of their targets. Their last participation in Europe’s top competition was in the 1982/83 season.

Felix has spent much of the past two seasons on loan, playing 44 times for Barcelona in the 2023/24 season and scoring 10 goals. He was also loaned to Chelsea for the second half of the 2022/23 season for a fee of €11m. Felix is under contract with Atletico until 2027, although the feasibility of a deal is unclear. However, he is a player of interest to Villa manager Unai Emery.

The 24-year-old Felix is a potential target for Emery, who admires players who can operate in various positions across the front line, such as Morgan Rogers, who was signed in January. Villa are also interested in Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, who has a €58m release clause. However, the Spanish forward is one of Barcelona’s top targets after his impressive performance at Euro 2024.

Diaby is expected to sign a five-year deal with Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad, who are also inquiring about the availability of Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson. Villa are set to announce the £50m signing of midfielder Amadou Onana from Everton, who has completed his medical.
