Manchester United star Harry Maguire has said criticism of England’s Euro 2024 campaign is “ridiculous”, arguing that it is normal not to take risks when playing in tournaments.
Speaking about playing in major tournaments, Maguire said: “You can’t be gung-ho in tournaments, you can’t afford to make mistakes. That’s why you rarely see big scorelines in this Euros. I don’t know what the media and fans expected from England, that they would beat Serbia 4-0 in the first game, then beat Denmark 3-0. Did they think it was going to be like walking in the park?”
Maguire was unable to join England at the Euros due to injury, a fact that he was very disappointed about. Looking back, he said: “It was incredibly tough not to be at the Euros. It was really frustrating, I was working so hard all season to get myself physically and mentally right, and I really felt I could have contributed to the team.”
Maguire has stated he is not afraid of competition: “Last year, my future was uncertain. But I sat down with the manager (Erik ten Hag) and he said he believed in me. When the chance came, I grabbed it. I don’t think we’re going to go from eighth in the Premier League to winning everything overnight, but I believe the team is heading in the right direction, and we’ll help get Manchester United back to where they belong.”
