The Mirror has reported that Erik ten Hag has taken five young stars with him to the United States on their pre-season tour, with the Red Devils boss hoping to find another Marcus Rashford-style breakout.
Many Manchester United players participated in the Euro 2024 and Copa America tournaments, which might affect their performance in the pre-season due to fatigue. Ten Hag decided to bring along several academy players to the United States to see if they can impress in games against Arsenal, Real Betis, and Liverpool, with the goal of playing more games for the first team in the new season.
One of the five young players is Amad Diallo, who scored the winning goal in the 120th minute against Liverpool in the FA Cup in March, making him a hero for Manchester United. He has been one of the most in-form players for United towards the end of last season, and he also scored against Rangers. Ten Hag has high hopes for the 22-year-old Ivorian.
The second player is Toby Collyer. The 20-year-old joined Manchester United from Brighton in 2022 and signed a new contract with the club until 2027 earlier this month. He made seven Premier League appearances as a substitute last season.
The third player is Ethan Wheatley. The 18-year-old striker has been with Manchester United since childhood and is a prolific scorer who can play on both wings. He is also 6ft 1in tall (and still growing). He scored 22 goals for the U18s and U21s last season and made a substitute appearance in Manchester United’s game against Sheffield United in April.
The fourth player is Harry Amass, who made a substitute appearance in Manchester United’s game against Liverpool in April. The England U17 left-back was signed by United last summer after beating Chelsea in the race for his signature. He has a chance to impress now that Luke Shaw is still on his Euro 2024 holiday and Tyrell Malacia is injured.
The fifth player is Jack Fletcher, the son of former Manchester United star Darren Fletcher. He joined Manchester United from Manchester City for a fee of £1.3 million last year. The Mirror reports that Ten Hag is a big fan of the 17-year-old midfielder, who has already featured in pre-season games against Rosenborg and Rangers and impressed the manager with his performances.
In short, Ten Hag hopes that these young players will be able to fill in the gaps in the squad and help the team compete in multiple competitions this season. He also hopes that their emergence will provide a psychological boost to the current players, pushing them to work even harder.
