TA sources report that London Mayor Khan has called for the Premier League to be held in the United States.
While Premier League CEO Richard Masters previously said that playing matches overseas isn’t on their current agenda, the concept has been raised again in recent months.
NBC Sports, which paid $2.7 billion for a six-year deal to exclusively broadcast every Premier League game from the 2022-23 season to the 2027-28 season, is pushing for in-season games in the U.S., according to Jon Miller, a top executive at the network, who spoke with The Athletic.
Opinions are divided on whether matches should be played abroad, but Khan is in favor of bringing the Premier League overseas. “Liverpool, the club I support as Mayor of London, is currently on a tour in America. They have a big fanbase in the US. Why shouldn’t those fans get to see a competitive match? We’ve seen other European leagues play elsewhere. All 32 NFL teams have played in London, and they all had a great experience. We’ve had some top baseball teams play in London.”
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has said he would do whatever it takes to bring the Premier League to the U.S. Bournemouth’s American owner, Bill Foley, has said he opposes the Premier League being played in the U.S.
