On July 22, anti-domestic violence campaigner David Challen called on Manchester United to donate the entire £27 million transfer fee from the sale of Mason Greenwood to charity.
Greenwood has joined Ligue 1 club Marseille in a deal worth up to £27 million to Manchester United, with an initial fee of £24 million already paid. He has not played for United since January 2022 when he was charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault. The charges were dropped in February 2023.
However, Greenwood was deemed unfit to play for Manchester United again. He spent the 2023-24 season on loan at Getafe in La Liga, where he scored 10 goals and provided 6 assists in 36 appearances. After the season, Manchester United sold Greenwood to Marseille.
Challen, the anti-domestic violence campaigner, said: “Manchester United is a multi-million-pound club that could have simply sacked Greenwood, but they put their own economic and financial well-being above the rights of women. The fact that they only contacted women’s charities at the last minute and haven’t made any donations is a deplorable act.”
