David Ornstein (DO), the renowned journalist for The Athletic and one of the world’s most trusted sources on football, revealed in an interview that he almost became a professional player before becoming a reporter.
Ornstein disclosed that he had a trial at a Premier League club, none other than Chelsea, where he trained for a whole year. However, he ultimately realized that a career in football wasn’t right for him.
Ornstein stated, “I only knew how to work hard, I wasn’t academically gifted, and I did poorly in school because all I thought about was football. I trained at Chelsea for a year, my ambition was to become a Premier League footballer, or at least a professional footballer.”
“Then I saw all these relatives going off to university with great grades, and I began to reflect on what I was doing. I was also working part-time at Pizza Hut, and that experience made me think I needed to work harder. Sadly, I wasn’t academically strong, so I opted to work hard instead.”
