York: Van Nistelrooy shouldn’t settle for being Ten Hag’s backup. He should go after his own vision.

Manchester United legend and treble winner, Dwight Yorke, believes Ruud van Nistelrooy’s return to the club as assistant coach is “a bit odd” and not a positive for either manager Erik ten Hag or the former striker himself.

York: Van Nistelrooy shouldn’t settle for being Ten Hag’s backup. He should go after his own vision.

Van Nistelrooy’s return is a huge boost for the fans, as the former striker scored 150 goals in five seasons at Old Trafford. However, for manager Erik ten Hag, Van Nistelrooy, who coached PSV Eindhoven in the 2022/23 season, is a potential replacement. Yorke believes the club’s appointment is not as simple as it seems.

In an interview with the media, Yorke didn’t shy away from talking about the impact Van Nistelrooy’s return has on Ten Hag’s team. He said: “If they sacked Ten Hag, it’s obvious they would then appoint Ruud as the next manager. If you’re the manager, then that’s really not an ideal situation to be in. I know Ruud personally, he’s a great guy, he has ambitions and has made that very clear in the past. In my opinion, you don’t feel too good when you’re taking on a job knowing that if your boss isn’t doing well, you’re going to be able to take over.”

Yorke added that the opportunity at Manchester United is so tempting that everyone has overlooked the inappropriateness of the appointment. Yorke said: “I think it’s a bit of an odd one and I believe Ruud’s professionalism and I’m sure he’ll do any job he’s asked to do as assistant coach — working for Ten Hag, under Ten Hag’s system — but I don’t like the premise of it. I’d rather sit on the side, express my intention that I want to be a manager.”

Despite this, Yorke still expresses understanding for his former teammate: “It’s a very delicate situation at the moment, unless Ruud decides he’s leaving as well if Ten Hag gets sacked. I personally don’t like his job at the moment, I’ve seen it with Roy Keane, Lambert, and O’Neill and Ruud’s like Keane, not suitable to be number two. Having said that, to get a job at Man United is so rare that you’re not going to say no to any role.”
