On August 2nd, Chelsea’s new head coach, Maresca, gave an interview, stating that while he and Guardiola share the same bald head, he is definitely not Guardiola 2.0.
Maresca was previously an assistant coach at Manchester City, working under Guardiola. In the 2022-23 season, he helped the team win the treble. Maresca revealed that he had spoken to Guardiola before joining Chelsea: “He was very happy for me joining Chelsea. I need to thank him for helping me achieve this point in my coaching career.”
Maresca stated that he will build the team in his own way: “When I first coached Leicester City, the management wanted to play like Manchester City. I told them directly that we don’t have the same players as Manchester City, and I’m not Guardiola. The same applies to Chelsea now. I need time to build the team, and the players need to understand the way we need to play.”
Maresca emphasized that he is not Guardiola 2.0: “Guardiola and I are both bald and have beards, but that doesn’t mean I will be exactly like him.”
