Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández has returned to the team after being caught in a media storm over a racially charged song. According to Goal, Chelsea player and fellow Frenchman Wesley Fofana has defended his teammate Enzo, saying he is not a racist.
Fofana said: “I was happy to see Enzo back, we talked. I explained why I didn’t like the video. He explained himself. He said sorry because he didn’t mean to hurt French fans or anyone. He didn’t understand what he was singing. I believe him. Because I know him. I know Enzo. He’s not a racist. It’s just that the video was bad. It wasn’t just Enzo. It was the Argentina team.”
Fofana added: “But now we’ve communicated, it’s good. I’m happy with the situation, because he understands me, I understand him, he apologized, I trust him, and that’s the most important thing. Enzo is an important player for Argentina. I hope it will be a lesson for him because it’s definitely a different culture.”
Fofana insisted they need to move on from the dispute for the good of the team.
Fofana said: “If I’m on one side, Enzo’s on the other, we’re fighting every day, or we’re not talking, or we’re not happy, on the pitch, then we’re not going to play well. It’s not just me and Enzo. It’s the whole team. That’s why we talked. It’s a good club.”
