Guardiola: Man City not ready to defend Premier League title, may suggest delayed return for Euro players

Guardiola stated that it is impossible for Man City to be fully prepared for their title defense in the new season and expects them to be ready by the start of the season. Due to the recent conclusion of the European Championship, Guardiola allowed his English internationals Foden, Stones, Walker, and Rodri to decide when to resume training. Many players will opt to return days before the Community Shield match against Manchester United on August 10, but Guardiola’s proposal would extend their return by a week if players remain exhausted.

In response to the congested schedule, Guardiola commented, “If FIFA, UEFA, and the Premier League don’t consider the players’ physical conditions, then the coaches have to, otherwise they’ll risk injuries, which is too much. That’s why they need three weeks or a month to recover, but the competition is there, and you have to adapt.”

“When everyone comes back, we have a good squad. We have 3-5 young players ready in case of need. We will be successful in the same way as in previous seasons, with the same schedule this year.”
