Recently, English legend Michael Owen said in an interview that he hopes Neymar will move to a Premier League club, which would be “a great decision” from a commercial perspective.
While a bold idea, Owen was interested in explaining his point of view. He said: “It would be interesting to see Neymar join the Premier League, but it depends on the club’s finances. He has a huge reputation, and I’m sure it would be a great decision for a lot of people from a commercial perspective. The only problem is that it would cost a lot of money.”
From a competitive perspective, Neymar’s appeal may not be as strong as it once was, after all, the Brazilian was once considered on par with Messi and Ronaldo. Owen didn’t shy away from this point: “Neymar’s name was once mentioned alongside Messi and Ronaldo, but when mentioning the strongest footballers in the world today, few would mention Neymar’s name. However, he is still incredibly talented, and if his salary demands are not too outrageous, I believe there will be clubs willing to take a chance.”
One of the biggest issues surrounding Neymar’s potential move is whether his style of play is suitable for the highly confrontational and high-pressure style prevalent in the Premier League. According to Owen, superstars will always find a way to adapt. Owen said: “I don’t think Neymar would adapt to the pressing style of Klopp’s or even Southgate’s Liverpool, but his technical ability and ability to attract defenders would find him a place in a more technical team. He can create space for other attackers, which is his value.”
Owen believes that London is the best place for Neymar to land. He said: “I suspect Neymar would enjoy playing in London, because it’s so glamorous. In the Premier League, Chelsea is the most likely team to sign Neymar. He would like Chelsea’s style, and the move would align with Chelsea’s strategy of signing high-profile players.”
