Son Heung-min has been one of the most important players at Tottenham Hotspur in the last decade, but that hasn’t stopped him from being subjected to the stern criticism of Jose Mourinho.
Son joined Spurs from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015 for £22m and has proven to be worth every penny, scoring 162 goals in 408 appearances.
The South Korean has played under a host of managers at Spurs, including Mourinho, who was in charge from 2019 to 2021. Looking back at his time with ‘The Special One’, Son recalled a specific moment.
In one match, Mourinho substituted Son, claiming he lacked fight, a decision which left the winger extremely unhappy.
However, Mourinho later apologised to Son via text and explained his actions, which satisfied the forward.
“In one game, Mourinho took me off. In front of everyone, he scolded me for not being aggressive enough against teams like Burnley or Stoke. I was so angry. I’m not a teenager and I shouldn’t be treated like that,” Son said in an interview.
“But after the game, Mourinho sent me a message saying: ‘I know you understand. I didn’t mean to target you or hurt you. But I need to make sure that the other players don’t slack off and I need to do it by scolding the best player, which is you’. I was very happy after reading that message.”
Mourinho is now managing Fenerbahce in Turkey while Son continues to shine at Spurs. After Harry Kane’s departure last summer, Son inherited the captain’s armband and has become a new leader for the side.
