According to the Manchester Evening News, former Manchester United treble winner Andy York has suggested that the young striker Rasmus Hojlund is not of the calibre required at Manchester United, going so far as to claim that he will not be able to score 20 goals in a season.
United signed Hojlund from Atalanta for a fee of £64 million (rising to £72 million with add-ons) a year ago, and while the Danish international showed promise in Serie A, his goalscoring record is a cause for concern. In fact, Hojlund’s first season at United has been a mixed bag, with his 10 Premier League goals mostly coming in a goalscoring burst after the turn of the year. With Anthony Martial leaving the club, Erik ten Hag felt the need to bolster his forward line, and as a result, he signed Dutch forward Wout Weghorst from Burnley. However, York believes that Hojlund could soon be relegated to second fiddle behind Weghorst.
York told the Manchester Evening News: “I think it would be a very difficult thing for Hojlund to become a 20-goal a season striker. From what I’ve seen, I don’t think it will ever happen. He’s still young but even watching him at the Euros in 2024, I just think he’s missing something. I’m not quite sure what it is, I’ve put it down to him not having that X-factor that you want in a striker.”
York also believes that Hojlund’s performances haven’t been bad but don’t warrant the high price tag. York said: “I think Hojlund is a good player, he’s still developing, and I have high hopes for the kid and wish him all the best in his career. I think he’ll continue to enjoy his football next season but I don’t think he’ll be the saviour for United, like the money that they’ve paid for him, at least at this point in time, I don’t see that.”
