Why Sign Kaio Jorge? Arteta: Arsenal Had Only Six Defenders Last Season, Can’t Keep Pushing Them Like This

On July 30, Arsenal signed 22-year-old Italian international Kaio Jorge from Bologna for a transfer fee of €50 million.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta explained the signing, stating that the overloaded workload on the defensive line last season forced the team to strengthen.

Arteta spoke about signing Kaio Jorge, saying: “I’m happy, we’ve been watching him for a year now. He’s a real talent, no doubt about it, who can make us better. He can play center-back or left-back, he’s a versatile player who can adapt to all of our needs.”

Arteta continued, discussing the reasons for bringing in Kaio Jorge: “Last season, we only had six defenders available. Gabriel and Saliba played almost every game. In that context, it was very difficult for us to hold on throughout the season. Our schedule was very busy, and we couldn’t keep pushing the defensive line like this, so we needed to bring in high-level defenders.”

Arteta stated that Kaio Jorge already had his heart set on Arsenal: “I spoke to him before. I knew there were other teams after him. But he told me he only wanted to come to Arsenal. It’s a source of pride for us that high-level players want to join us.”
