According to BBC journalist Nizaar Kinsella, Enzo Fernandez’s apology has been accepted by at least one player, and Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca will announce his return to the team at tomorrow’s press conference.
Enzo has spoken with several French players in the Chelsea squad and personally apologized after being accused of “reckless racism” by teammate Wesley Fofana.
The 23-year-old Argentine international arrived in Atlanta, USA, and explained and clarified his actions to his teammates after the controversy surrounding his singing of a song “mocking the France team turning into an African team”.
French players Disasi, Badiashile, Ugochukwu, Nkunku, Gusto and Fofana are all part of Chelsea’s travelling party in the USA.
It is understood that at least one player in Chelsea’s French contingent has expressed understanding after hearing Enzo’s explanation. Chelsea manager Maresca is expected to confirm Enzo’s return at tomorrow’s press conference, the Argentine midfielder who joined from Benfica for £107 million in 2023.
Enzo has also offered to donate to an anti-discrimination charity, and Chelsea FC will match this donation through their foundation. The incident is now considered closed internally.
