According to The Athletic, Newcastle United have made a formal bid for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.
The offer was submitted in the past few days, with Newcastle hoping to complete a key signing to improve the squad before the new season. The potential transfer is still in negotiations. Sky Sports report that Crystal Palace have slapped a £60m price tag on Guehi.
Guehi, 24, is under contract with Crystal Palace until 2026 and has so far shown no indication of wanting to extend his deal. The defender has attracted interest from several top European clubs, but Newcastle have moved quickly and become the first to make a formal offer.
Guehi joined Crystal Palace in the summer of 2021 from Chelsea on a permanent transfer. Since then, he has quickly become a vital member of the team, making 111 appearances for the club and scoring five goals.
Guehi has also impressed on the international stage. He was a key part of England’s Euro 2020 campaign, starting as a centre-back and helping the Three Lions reach the final. He played almost every minute of the tournament, except for the quarter-final against Switzerland where he was suspended due to an accumulation of yellow cards.
To address the potential void left by Guehi’s departure, Crystal Palace have been active in the summer transfer window, signing Cheick Doucouré from Real Betis to bolster their centre-back options. The club have also signed winger Ismaila Sarr and midfielder Daichi Kamada, while Michael Olise, James Tomkins and Jairo Riedewald have left Selhurst Park.
