Recently, current French Olympic team coach Thierry Henry gave an exclusive interview to Arsenal FC, revealing the reason behind his move to the club.
The former Arsenal legend said: “A few years after Wenger stepped down as Monaco manager, he personally came to watch a Juventus vs Udinese game, where I was playing. After the game, I flew back to Paris, and Wenger happened to be on the same flight. He told me he watched the whole game. After that, we exchanged numbers. He said he didn’t understand why I was playing on the wing, when, in fact, I was a full-back at that time.”
Henry continued: “He told me I was wasting my time. He remembered that I was a number 9. He also said it would be a fantastic outcome if we could meet again. The gears of my destiny started to turn from that point on.”
This unexpected flight encounter led Henry to join Arsenal six months later for a transfer fee of €16.1 million. Juventus had initially signed Henry from Monaco for €12.5 million.
Henry went on to make 377 appearances for Arsenal, scoring 228 goals and providing 97 assists. Ironically, Henry was used as a left-back at Juventus, where he made 20 appearances, scoring 3 goals and providing 2 assists.
