With Catalan media promoting Olmo’s return to Barcelona as a “ten-year journey home”, the well-known website “Transfermarkt” has taken the opportunity to list the top 15 most expensive “homecoming” transfers in football.
Barcelona’s signing of Olmo, costing 55 million euros, ranks third. In addition, Barcelona’s 2011 acquisition of La Masia graduate Fabregas from Arsenal, for 54 million euros, ranks fourth.
Topping the list is Lukaku’s transfer from Inter Milan to Chelsea (2021), costing 100 million euros (with an additional 13 million in bonuses). However, Lukaku has become a problem for Chelsea. Atletico Madrid’s purchase of Morata for 36 million ranks eleventh. Four transfers are tied for twelfth place: Hummels returning to Borussia Dortmund from Bayern for 35 million euros; Werner returning to Leipzig from Chelsea for 35 million euros; Gotze returning to Borussia Dortmund from Bayern Munich for 35 million euros; and Bonucci returning to Juventus from AC Milan for 35 million euros.
