Van Nistelrooy: I could never say no to Manchester United. Collaboration with Ten Hag has had a good start

This summer, Manchester United’s coaching staff underwent major changes. Erik ten Hag’s previous assistants, Steve McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag, both left the club, while Van Nistelrooy and former Eagles coach Steve Hack were appointed as Manchester United’s new assistant coaches. While it may appear to some that Van Nistelrooy, who previously held the position of head coach at PSV Eindhoven, is underqualified for the role of assistant coach, he insists that he could not refuse the offer from Manchester United.

In his interview with the club website, Van Nistelrooy said: “To be honest, it feels really special to be back. I mean, when Manchester United offered me the opportunity to become an assistant coach, I thought it was brilliant. I never thought I would come back in this capacity, but when it happened, it was something I absolutely couldn’t refuse. Then I flew to Manchester, came back to Carrington and Old Trafford, and saw the changes and the things that remained the same in the city. It’s a really, really special feeling.”

Van Nistelrooy also discussed the division of responsibilities between himself and Hack, as well as the changes in pre-season preparations. Van Nistelrooy said: “From a collective point of view, it’s important to integrate the different phases of the game into the team’s daily training, such as expectations in terms of pressing, maintaining shape, midfield interceptions, or all phases of the game. To be clear about what we want to achieve, how we want to execute it, and how we translate that into practice on the training ground. I think we both agree with the manager on this, and then we start from the training ground, looking for individual or team impact. We’re aligned in our goals and opinions, with the intention of bringing Manchester United back to the top, and I think we’ve already made a good start.”
