On August 9, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes bluntly stated his lack of confidence in the club’s prospects for the 2024/25 season.
On the “The Overlap” show, Scholes clearly stated: “No, I have no confidence in the team’s current state going into the new season.” He pointed out that Manchester United is still facing a series of problems, particularly in the midfield area, an issue that has persisted throughout last season.
“Casemiro is tired, and he’s not the kind of player who can shoulder all the responsibilities in midfield alone. He needs support from his partner.”
Scholes expressed concern about the current state of Manchester United’s midfield, saying, “Furthermore, the team is plagued by injuries. Will Mount recover? Even if Mount returns, he can’t fully replace Bruno Fernandes’ role.”
The former Manchester United midfielder also mentioned his doubts about the goalkeeper position, saying: “I think the goalkeeper position is a big problem. Onana’s performance has never made me feel secure. He conceded against Liverpool in a friendly, which did make me worry.”
Scholes further added that last season the team faced problems with injuries, and now “there’s no sign of any improvement.” Defender Varane’s recent surgery for an injury, expected to keep him out for three months, further highlights the multiple challenges facing the club.
“As the new season is about to kick off, I really can’t find any reason to be optimistic about Manchester United’s situation,” Scholes concluded.
