After Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS took over the sporting side of Manchester United, they have undertaken sweeping changes, a landmark event being the implementation of strict layoff measures. Recently, a long-serving former employee who was laid off publicly blasted the club, accusing them of “losing the soul of the club for a few quid!”
To ensure compliance with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules, Manchester United has laid off nearly a quarter of its workforce, affecting up to 250 people. Steve Brown was one of the victims of this wave of layoffs, and at the age of 52, he has had to start looking for work again and has expressed his dissatisfaction with his former employer on his personal LinkedIn page.
Brown wrote: “After 23 years of loyal service to Manchester United, my time has come to an end, not by choice but by redundancy. It’s not how I imagined leaving Manchester United, but these things test you. I’ve had some of the best times of my life whilst at United, seen absolute legends of the game and been (albeit a small part of) part of some legendary moments. I’m not sure where the road or the door will lead me at 52, but I’m going to carry on looking for work. Hopefully my skills will be transferable and I’ll be lucky enough to continue working.”
In the closing paragraph of his post, Brown writes a message of warning to Manchester United: “I wish Manchester United all the best in the future. It has changed a great deal over the past 23 years, some good and some not so good. Don’t lose the soul of the club for a few quid. The people who were there made it so special, with so much history, just carry on and write the next chapter.”
Brown was hired by Sir Alex Ferguson in 2001 as a scout administrator, where he served as an assistant analyst for the first team from 2003 to 2013, while also serving as a performance analyst for the reserve and U18 teams for a decade. Following Ferguson’s retirement, Brown moved to the youth academy, and his last role at Manchester United was as a player performance analyst.
