On August 10th, during the Community Shield match between Manchester City and Manchester United, Pep Guardiola was furious with Ederson at half-time, storming into the tunnel.
The incident occurred just before the half-time whistle with the score at 0-0. Guardiola was angered by his players’ lack of urgency and failure to actively seek a goal to take the lead.
What truly sparked Guardiola’s rage was Ederson’s decision to kick the ball out of play instead of attempting to build an attack in the dying seconds of the first half. Upon witnessing this, Guardiola erupted in fury, smashing a water bottle to the ground.
Guardiola then turned to his goalkeeping coach, Xabi Mancisidor, criticizing Ederson for the missed opportunity. Clearly, the Spanish manager was unhappy with his team’s first-half performance.
In the second half, Manchester United took the lead through Alejandro Garnacho. However, Bernardo Silva equalized, and Manchester City eventually emerged victorious in a dramatic penalty shootout, defeating the Red Devils 7-6 to claim the 2024 Community Shield. During the penalty shootout, Ederson not only saved Sancho’s penalty but also converted the fifth penalty for City.
After the game, Guardiola praised Ederson: “He, along with Haaland and De Bruyne, are our best penalty takers.”
Prior to the match, Guardiola had confirmed Ederson would stay at Manchester City, putting an end to rumours linking the goalkeeper with a move to Saudi Arabia this summer.
