Arsenal will host Brighton in the second round of the Premier League at 7:30 pm on August 31st. In the pre-match press conference, Arsenal coach Arteta spoke about transfer issues, title contention, long-term coaching, and his players.
Arteta refused to talk about Merino: “I can’t talk about any players who aren’t with us yet. Will something happen soon? I don’t know, tomorrow’s match is the most important.”
When asked if “Arsenal players feel it is time to win the league,” Arteta pointed out: “I’ve always felt the need to believe in our players, that’s the only way to get the best out of your team and individual players. But when it comes to whether you win something, that’s another matter. We want to perform at our best in every game and win.”
Arsenal were beaten twice by Villa last season, to which Arteta answered: “They scored, we didn’t, it’s as simple as that. We had many chances in both games, that’s the biggest difference. Why are Aston Villa tough? They dominate many aspects of the game, and when you give them space, they do very well.”
Arteta pointed out that Timber can play midfield: “He can play many positions, his versatility is one of his biggest strengths. He’s been out for 11 months, and it’s great to have him back. He’s played some high-quality games in the past few days.”
Speaking about Rice, Arteta pointed out: “Should he play as a 6 or an 8? Both. At his age, it’s a big mistake to not be able to play different positions. In the game, he will play different roles depending on the opponent and their performance, which is really important when we’re short of players.”
Speaking about five players being named in the PFA Team of the Year, Arteta pointed out: “It’s a very proud moment. It’s a big deal to have 5 players in the team of the year for two years in a row. Everyone at the club is proud of them, proud of the team.”
Speaking about potential signings before the transfer window closes, Arteta pointed out: “Anything can happen, especially in the last week (before the window closes). You have to be prepared, a lot of surprises can happen. We are prepared.”
Speaking about some clubs making very few moves in the summer transfer window, Arteta pointed out: “Every team has different circumstances. We know what we want to do and what we can do, that’s what matters.”
Arteta also spoke about Sterling: “My time working with Sterling was special. I think we built a very strong relationship. He was performing very well then, and also taught me a lot about the individual, about how players think, and about how to support and help them. I have a deep affection for him.”
When asked if “he would look to stay at Arsenal for a long time like Guardiola and Klopp,” Arteta pointed out: “I see my today and tomorrow. We (coaches) have to live with a sense of urgency. That’s what I really like. Looking at two or three years later, as a club, you have to plan for what will happen based on the results we achieve, that’s the reality. Do your best to do it, and enjoy it as much as possible.”
