Athletes often make baffling decisions to improve their performance, and according to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester City star Josko Gvardiol has recently undergone teeth alignment surgery, citing performance enhancement as the reason.
Gvardiol is treating teeth alignment as his “secret weapon” for the upcoming season. His physiotherapist recommended the surgery to improve his jaw alignment, which could in turn lead to improved posture and balance. Gvardiol completed the surgery at a clinic named Dentum in his home country.
Katarina Krajacic, an orthodontist and member of the treatment team responsible for Gvardiol’s surgery, said in an interview: “There is a growing awareness among athletes regarding the importance of this procedure, with more and more seeking the help of orthodontists and posture specialists to boost their on-field performance. If the upper and lower teeth don’t perfectly align, it not only affects your ability to chew and your oral health, but also your posture, which can have a major impact on an athlete’s performance.”
The treatment costs up to £5,000 and lasts anywhere between 3 to 18 months.
