According to exclusive reports from British media outlet The Mail, Bruno Guimarães has been named Newcastle’s new captain, meaning the Brazilian will not be leaving St. James’ Park this summer.
In last Saturday’s Premier League opener against newly promoted Southampton, with captain Jamaal Lascelles still sidelined through injury and vice-captain Kieran Trippier benched, Guimarães wore the captain’s armband for the first time. Manager Eddie Howe believes Guimarães will bring even more energy to the team now that he is captain, and he also wanted to clarify the team’s captaincy situation to everyone.
Currently, in addition to Guimarães, Newcastle’s leadership team consists of Lascelles as the nominal captain, Trippier, Murphy, Wilson and Burn as the four vice-captains. Trippier’s future at Newcastle is currently uncertain. The club want him to stay and believe he will play an important role in the dressing room, regardless of whether he wears the armband or not.
On the other hand, there are reports that Guimarães has been closely watched by Manchester City, who are confident of signing the Brazilian midfielder before the transfer window closes.
