Mikel: Chelsea spent too much on players they didn’t need, selling academy players to balance the books

Former Manchester City star Mikel criticized Chelsea’s poor transfer policy during a talkSPORT appearance, accusing the Blues of spending too much money on players they didn’t need and having to sell their own academy players to balance the books.

Chelsea’s recent moves to sell Chalobah and Gallagher have sparked anger among many Chelsea fans. Gallagher has already flown to Madrid to finalize his move to Atlético, but has been recalled after other deals failed. However, Chelsea have not allowed these two academy-trained players to train with the first team, which has sparked criticism from the media.

Mikel also pointed out: “These are two young lads who bleed blue. They’ve been at Chelsea since they were kids, and now we’re having to sell them to balance the books. But the reason is because the owners have spent so much money, buying players with high price tags, that’s what it is. Spent too much money on players we don’t need.”.

Mikel pointed out: “For me, the best player last season, apart from Palmer, was Gallagher, he was the only one you could see giving everything for the club, running, putting in the effort, you know what I mean. In my opinion, I thought he should stay. When I saw Chalobah come back from injury, I thought he should stay too, he’s our best center-back, we lost very few games when he came back, he was fantastic when he came back from injury! But now, we have to sell two players like that to balance the books, both of them have given so much to Chelsea, but now you have to sell them…”

Mikel pointed out that the owners are to blame: “I think it’s bad business from the owners, definitely.”.

Mikel played for Chelsea for 11 seasons from 2006 to 2017, winning 11 trophies including two Premier League titles, four FA Cups and the 2012 Champions League. The former Chelsea star, looking ahead to the new season, pointed out that Enzo must shine this season to prove his worth: “He needs to come good, we’ve talked about him, made excuses for him, he won the World Cup, he was fantastic in Argentina. But I think he needs to come good this season at Chelsea, you can’t keep making excuses for him.”.
