Clattenburg: Referees have a responsibility to make as many correct decisions as possible, must stop relying on VAR

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg has said referees have a “responsibility” to trust their own decisions again and “not rely on VAR”.

Howard Webb, chief executive of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), has said that there will be less VAR intervention this season to give more support to referees’ judgement and speed up decision-making to improve the system.

Clattenburg was appointed as Nottingham Forest’s refereeing analyst in February, but his tenure was short-lived as he resigned after just three months due to some controversial comments made about referees.

Clattenburg said: “From this weekend, referees have a responsibility to make as many correct decisions as possible on the field of play and not rely on VAR. VAR should be used only once every few games, not one or two times every game like last season.”

“I found [last season] that referees weren’t making instant decisions as quickly as they used to and relying on VAR. VAR would then say there’s no clear and obvious error so no intervention. That led to inconsistencies and frustrated fans. The biggest message I’ve got from Webb and his team is that they want referees to get back to the game and make decisions.”
