The Mirror has published comments from Manchester United and England legend Teddy Sheringham. The former striker offered high-level advice from a player’s perspective, pointing out that Rashford’s performance next season will depend on the coaching of Erik ten Hag’s assistant, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and the relationship between Rashford and van Nistelrooy.
“I think van Nistelrooy can help Rashford improve his shooting, but it depends a lot on the relationship between them,” Sheringham said. “Strikers are emotional, and if you say things to them that upset them, then it can be tough to get them back on your side.”
Rashford underperformed last season, and was consequently left out of England’s European Championship squad. Manchester United’s aim this season is to finish in the top four of the Premier League, and ten Hag has said he hopes Rashford can recapture his previous form of scoring 30 goals in a single season. This will require help from United’s new assistant coach, van Nistelrooy. As one of the legendary strikers in the Red Devils’ history, van Nistelrooy is now responsible for overseeing Manchester United’s attack training and guiding the strikers.
Sheringham pointed out: “For example, if van Nistelrooy is coaching Rashford and tells him to look at other players’ performances – maybe that player is someone Rashford doesn’t respect, maybe Rashford thinks he’s better than that player – then Rashford might ignore van Nistelrooy’s advice or even lose respect for his opinion. It’s like that, when coaches ask players to emulate others, it can upset them. Like I said, we strikers are very emotional, we need someone to put their arm around us, we need someone to praise us. Praising them for being great is important, because you need your center forward to be confident, and if you can’t support your center forward in the right way, then the relationship will be difficult.”
Sheringham offered his former teammate Ruud van Nistelrooy some honest advice: “Coaching strikers is a vital role at the club. Ruud (van Nistelrooy) should forget about being a top player himself when he’s coaching. We’ve all heard stories of top players transitioning into coaching and encountering setbacks because their players can’t do what they used to do with their eyes closed. Van Nistelrooy needs to forget about his past self, truly integrate into the current Manchester United, and figure out what he can do to help the current players reach their potential.”
