Chelsea pundit Paul Merson questioned the Blues’ management after the club announced a contract extension for Palmer until 2033.
Merson said: “I don’t think this is a move that makes Chelsea better.”
“Nine-year deal for Palmer? Because they don’t know what they’re doing! I’m not trying to have a go at them, but it’s a nine-year deal! How can you judge how Palmer is going to be over that time?”
“He was incredible last season, but this season, every team will be thinking ‘stop Palmer’. Then you give him a nine-year deal? Don’t get me wrong, I like Palmer, but seven or nine-year deals for players, I don’t understand… ”
