Guardiola: We won’t spend the money from Alvarez’s sale on a replacement, we’ll promote youngsters

Since officially joining Manchester City in 2022, Argentine striker Alvarez has made a noticeable impact. In the 2022-23 season, Alvarez played 49 times, scoring 17 goals and providing 4 assists, helping Manchester City win a series of titles, including the Champions League and the Premier League. In the 2023-24 season, Alvarez has played 54 times for Manchester City, scoring 19 goals and providing 13 assists, helping Manchester City successfully defend their Premier League title. However, although he has won a series of titles with Manchester City, Alvarez has not been comfortable at the club, as he is not a core player in Guardiola’s tactical system.

As a result, Alvarez actively sought a transfer this summer, and his move to Atletico Madrid is almost confirmed. For Manchester City, selling Alvarez means the club will receive around £80 million in transfer fees. However, Guardiola does not intend to use this money to buy a replacement for Alvarez.

Guardiola: We won't spend the money from Alvarez's sale on a replacement, we'll promote youngsters

After Manchester City won the Community Shield, Guardiola said in an interview: “We won’t spend money on buying a backup striker, because we have a lot of talented youngsters, like Oscar Bobb, James McAtee, and Orel Mangala. They have the ability to play here. McAtee is particularly good, like Oscar Bobb was last season. Obviously, we can rely on them.”

Guardiola also said: “If we want to buy someone, the price has to be right. Now, we need to strengthen the midfield, find a ball-playing center-back to partner Rodri.” On August 18, Manchester City will face Chelsea away in the first round of the new Premier League season.
