Nestor Gorosito, former Argentine national team player and River Plate manager, has criticized Pep Guardiola, claiming his tactics are nothing new and are reminiscent of tactics used 70-80 years ago. Gorosito also stated that coaching in Europe is 100 times easier than coaching in South America.
Gorosito stated: “Guardiola makes people believe his tactics are new, but his current style of play existed at River Plate 70-80 years ago. Argentine Independiente and Boca Juniors also played this way. Many teams played like that back then. He wants people to believe this is something new, but it’s a lie.”
This isn’t the first time Gorosito has criticized Guardiola. Previously, he had spoken about the differences between South American and European leagues at a press conference: “In Europe, managing a team is 100 times easier than here. Sometimes I hear them say, ‘Why doesn’t South America play every three days?’ But Europeans travel by private plane, while people here don’t have the money to do so. Many are thinking about how to save a meal or two a day… I hope all the great coaches in Europe come here to coach. Two minutes before a game, you don’t even know if a player is eligible. I want Klopp, or Guardiola, to come here and try it out and see if it’s as easy as it is there!”
Gorosito, 60 years old, is a former Argentine top scorer and played for the national team from 1989 to 1997. He was a key player for Argentina in winning the 1993 Copa America. He retired in 2002 and became a coach, managing teams like San Lorenzo, Lanús, Rosario Central, Argentinos Juniors, and River Plate. He won the Argentine Cup in 2019 and the Paraguayan top league title in 2020. A prominent South American coach, Gorosito was sacked by Tigre in March of this year and is currently awaiting his next opportunity.
