Van Persie’s Heerenveen lost 0-1 to Ajax, while Rooney’s Plymouth lost 0-4 to Sheffield Wednesday. Both suffered opening day defeats and failed to secure their first league win of the new season.
Van Persie, at the age of 41 years and 5 days, also became the youngest manager in Heerenveen’s Eredivisie history.
