Chelsea have made a number of signings under new manager Maresca in the offseason, but they have missed out on a star player.
Celtic, who defeated Chelsea 4-1 in a pre-season friendly, had a standout player in O’Riley. The 23-year-old was instrumental in Celtic’s domestic double last season, scoring 19 goals and contributing 18 assists.
Despite O’Riley’s impressive performances, Maresca has failed to show interest. Brighton are now on the verge of signing the player, a move that has surprised Paul Merson. “I’m astonished Chelsea didn’t sign O’Riley,” Merson said. “He was outstanding against Chelsea in America. He’s a very good young player who ticks all the boxes for Chelsea.”
However, Brighton have a proven track record of developing young talent, so O’Riley might be better off at Brighton where he will be given the opportunity to play and train. It’s unlikely he would even get on the pitch at Chelsea, never mind start a game.
