On August 15th, according to the Daily Mail, Howard Webb, the Premier League’s chief refereeing officer, has put forward six proposals regarding VAR usage, with the most notable being a ban on managers criticising VAR decisions in post-match press conferences.
Increase clarity around VAR interventions
To re-establish a high standard for VAR usage in the Premier League, the decision on whether to use VAR will be left to the referee on the pitch, unless there is a clear and obvious error.
Reduce delays in matches
The widely talked about semi-automated offside technology was a great success in both the European Championships and the Champions League, leading to an average reduction in checking time of 31 seconds. However, this technology will not be used in the Premier League at the start of the season, as the league is currently using equipment from a different provider, Genius Sports.
Enhance the fan experience
Replays of key incidents will be shown to fans in stadiums during Premier League matches this season. Referees will not use microphones to announce decisions, as they did during the Olympics, as this would put too much pressure on the officials.
Improve VAR training and consistency
Webb plans to recruit a team of professional VAR officials and develop dedicated VAR training courses.
Greater transparency
The Premier League will launch a new social media account to provide explanations during matches on why VAR decisions have been made.
Enhanced education and communication
Webb hopes to undertake education campaigns to improve understanding of VAR amongst players, managers, the media, and fans. Premier League managers will be prohibited from criticizing VAR usage in post-match press conferences.
