According to Man City blogger “MCFCDaps,” Ilkay Gundogan did not request any teammate to give up their number upon his return to Manchester City, and he will inherit the No. 19 shirt left vacant by Julian Alvarez.
Gundogan joined Manchester City in the 2016/17 season and was given the No. 8 jersey. He wore the No. 22 shirt after moving to Barcelona last season. After his departure, Manchester City gave the No. 8 shirt to Mateo Kovacic.
This time returning to Manchester City, Gundogan doesn’t intend to reclaim the No. 8 shirt, but will take the No. 19 shirt vacated by Alvarez’s departure.
During his previous spell at Manchester City, Gundogan made 304 appearances, scored 60 goals and provided 38 assists, helping the club win five Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups.
