Since Emery joined Aston Villa in 2022, most of his coaching staff members have been Spanish. Club executives such as CEO Monchi and Director of Football Operations Damian Vidagán are also from Spain. Although the first team has only two Spanish players, Pau Torres and Alex Moreno, this hasn’t stopped newly signed star Amadou Onana from enthusiastically embracing learning Spanish.
According to The Sun, the £50 million player has requested Emery to use Spanish in communication with him. Onana already speaks five languages – Dutch, English, German, French and Wolof, and now he’s looking to add another skill to his repertoire.
“I’ve asked Emery and his coaching staff to speak to me in Spanish so I can try to answer them in Spanish,” Onana said.
“I love Spain and go there at least once a year. It’s a very beautiful language, and it would be amazing for me to be able to speak it fluently.”
“There are a lot of people here who speak Spanish, so I have a good environment to learn. So Emery can help me improve not only my football skills but also my Spanish.”
Onana joined Aston Villa on July 22nd from Everton in a record-breaking transfer. There are high hopes for him, as the move is part of the club’s rebuild of their midfield after Douglas Luiz joined Juventus for £43 million in June.
Aston Villa will be participating in the Champions League for the first time since 1983 in the upcoming season, and Onana will play a crucial role in this historic campaign.
