On August 15, according to the Premier League official, semi-automated offside technology will not be used at the start of the new season on August 16, and is expected to be introduced after the autumn international break.
The Premier League official wrote that Premier League clubs unanimously voted in April to introduce semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) in matches starting in the 2024/25 season. Semi-automated offside technology will not be ready before the season starts on August 16, but is expected to be deployed after the autumn international week.
How semi-automated offside technology works
Genius Sports-powered computer vision cameras will be installed in every Premier League stadium, these cameras spread across the pitch will track the football as well as thousands of data points of each player and football.
When a game reaches a key decision moment, such as a penalty, goal or red card, the technology will track to see if any attacking player involved in the event was offside.
If the player is in an offside position when receiving the ball, the technology will alert officials at the VAR Hub. They will check if the point of contact with the ball and the automated offside line are correctly recorded. The VAR will then notify the referee on the field whether offside has been recorded.
