Howard Webb, head of the Premier League refereeing company, recently said in an interview that to increase transparency in refereeing decisions, all referees will be asked to declare the team they support.
The move stems from last season’s controversy involving Nottingham Forest and Everton. After the game, Nottingham Forest released a statement accusing referee Stuart Attwell of bias, suggesting his support for Luton Town led him to make unfavorable decisions against Forest, a relegation rival of Luton.
Webb said, “Before the start of the season, we are asking referees to declare if they have a clear team affiliation. We need to make this information public so that we can be more transparent and impartial when reviewing decisions in the future.”
“We will also carefully assess this information and take it into account when drawing up refereeing lists.”
