On August 21st, The Sun reported that fans had discovered damaged seats at Old Trafford ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League opener against Fulham.
It is reported that minutes before kick-off, a fan found his seat broken and proceeded to fix it with a drill, leaving fellow Manchester United supporters bewildered.
This prompted a wave of online ridicule from Manchester United fans: “Drill-powered stadium,” “This is why we need a new stadium,” and “Who brings a drill to a football game?”
Manchester United responded with, “The person drilling was a club employee and it’s not uncommon to have a few seats that need repairs on match days.”
In recent years, Old Trafford’s rundown condition has been widely documented. The stadium’s peeling paint, food safety concerns, and infamous leaky roof have become public knowledge.
It is worth noting that following the arrival of new shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Manchester United announced the construction of a new 100,000-capacity stadium in early August.
The club has stated that the stadium is scheduled to be completed by 2030. Additionally, Manchester United will downsize Old Trafford to a 30,000 capacity stadium, dedicated to hosting women’s and youth football matches.
