Everton suffered a 0-4 defeat to Tottenham in the second round of the 2024/25 Premier League season. The team has had a disastrous start to the season, highlighting their financial difficulties.
In an interview with Sky Sports, Everton manager Sean Dyche said: “In football, when people ask me ‘why don’t you buy players?’, my usual answer is ‘we have no money’. It’s like I’m unwilling to spend. I’m not that type of manager. Unless new funds are injected, we can’t change the situation. That’s Everton’s current situation. We have to sell key players. It’s a dilemma we can’t escape.”
Dyche explained: “Everton performed well at the end of last season, but then we had to sell a player who was growing and playing a vital role – Amadou Onana. Afterwards, we brought in other players and started helping them grow and mature, making them core members of the team. This is a repeating cycle.”
Dyche admitted the team is currently unable to make any signings. Everton were deducted a total of eight points last season for breaching the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules.
During the 2024 summer transfer window, Everton generated £71 million in funds from player sales, with the most significant deal being the £50 million sale of Amadou Onana to Aston Villa. However, the team failed to find suitable replacements.
Before the start of the 2024/25 season, Dyche said: “Not just the players mentioned, any player could be sold. The club needs to better balance its financial situation.”
According to Everton’s financial reports, the team has accumulated over £500 million in losses over the past five years. To raise funds to repay debts and avoid further deductions, the team has been forced to sell star players.
Everton’s disastrous start to the new season was foreseeable. After losing 0-3 to Brighton in their opening game, they suffered another 0-4 defeat to Tottenham, currently sitting at the bottom of the Premier League table with a goal difference of -7.
