Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola spoke to the media after his side’s 2-0 victory over Chelsea in the Premier League opener, with goals from Erling Haaland and Mateo Kovacic.
Guardiola said: “I really didn’t expect this result, even though I know what these players are capable of, but it’s the first game, and we haven’t had much time to train. We’re still some way off our best, so it’s good news to get the three points. The bad news is that we have 65 to 70 games to play. But starting with a victory is very helpful for confidence.”
“We only had two or three days to prepare, and we made up for a lot of our shortcomings through the collective effort of the team. Everyone performed at their best, which was enough. You can’t imagine how lucky I am to be going through these moments with this incredible group of players.”
On winning without Rodri, he said: “Rodri is very important for us, so it was also important for Kovacic to be here because he is an experienced player and a great player. He had a fantastic performance.”
