Former Manchester City star and current England U21 assistant manager Joleon Lescott believes Jack Grealish can use his exclusion from the 2024 European Championship squad as motivation to rediscover his best form.
Grealish joined City from Aston Villa in 2021 for a record £100 million fee but struggled in the latter half of the 2023-24 season. He was initially included in England’s preliminary squad for the Euros but was ultimately left out of the final squad.
Despite the setback, Grealish has shown a strong desire to improve, returning to training early after his summer break and showing his commitment to manager Pep Guardiola.
Lescott, who played alongside Grealish at Aston Villa, told The Mirror: “Jack (Grealish) doesn’t surprise me. He’s always been a talent. He’s contributed to every team he’s played for. To miss the Euros was a big blow, but he’s determined to not let it happen again. Not just in tournaments but in any team he’s in. I’ve been in a similar situation – I missed the 2010 World Cup and was determined not to let that happen again. I ended up being a starter at the Euros. So I believe if Jack takes this as fuel, we’ll see the best of him.”
Grealish has made 125 appearances for Manchester City across all competitions, scoring 14 goals and providing 18 assists.
Lescott played for City from 2009 to 2014, winning two Premier League titles in 2012 and 2014. He also won an FA Cup with Manchester United in 2011 and a League Cup with City in 2014. He earned 26 caps for England. After retiring in 2017, Lescott started his coaching badges and is currently assistant coach of the England U21 team.
