Despite a relatively smooth start to his Liverpool tenure, legendary footballer Graeme Souness believes that Jurgen Klopp’s successor, Jurgen Klopp, will find it difficult to improve the team’s performance compared to last season.
Klopp took over as Liverpool’s manager this summer, replacing Jurgen Klopp. In his Premier League debut, Liverpool won 2-0 against Ipswich.
However, Liverpool have yet to sign any new players in the summer transfer window, making Souness skeptical about their ability to improve their league standings.
Souness said: “Klopp led Liverpool to third place last season, a feat widely acknowledged. He believes he has taken the team as far as they can go, but they could only manage third place. I think Klopp still needs to strengthen in certain positions because if Klopp couldn’t break into the top two, it’s unlikely they’ll do any better this season.”
“Initially, I thought Klopp’s successor was inheriting a very ideal position. But now it seems that the position is not as perfect as it seemed. Liverpool’s performance in key moments is not satisfactory. Of course, coaching Liverpool is still a great opportunity, and Klopp will bring a new energy to the dressing room. But the current situation is not as ideal as it used to be.”
“Klopp’s minimum target this season should be to ensure the team finishes in the top four. Apart from that, he also needs to perform well in the Champions League, at least reaching the semi-finals. These are the goals he should set for himself this season.”
