Jack Fletcher, the 17-year-old son of Manchester United legend Darren Fletcher, scored twice, including a stunning wonder goal, as the Red Devils U21s overcame a two-goal deficit to defeat Barnsley 3-2 in the EFL Trophy.
Jack, who joined United alongside twin brother Tyler last summer, has been training with the first team regularly and is tipped to follow in his father’s footsteps by making it to the senior side. He showcased his talent in the away fixture against Barnsley.
Barnsley went into the half-time break 2-0 ahead after scoring in the 10th and 37th minutes. United were still trailing 2-1 in the 83rd minute. However, Fletcher bagged a brace in the 84th and 87th minutes to complete a stunning comeback victory. One goal was a clever finish from the edge of the box, but it was his second strike that stole the show. He unleashed a phenomenal half-volley from 35 yards out, leaving the Barnsley goalkeeper with no chance.
Coincidentally, his father Darren, who is a first-team coach under Erik ten Hag, was in the stands to witness his son’s match-winning brace.
Jack spent nine years at Manchester City’s youth academy before switching to United. He signed his first professional contract with the Red Devils in April. Both he and his twin brother Tyler are highly-rated by the club, who believe they have the potential to play for the first team in the future.
The 17-year-old has experience representing both England and Scotland at youth level. He has previously played for England U15, U16 and U17, and also represented Scotland U16. It is expected that both nations will be vying for his services in the future.
