England star Dele Alli is facing a crucial test in his career, according to The Guardian. After becoming a free agent following the end of his contract with Everton, the 28-year-old midfielder has been working to regain fitness after a groin injury, hindering his progress.
Despite not being under contract with Everton, the club has not closed the door on Alli. To earn back their trust, Alli must undergo a series of specially designed tests to demonstrate his recovery from injury and ability to meet the demands of the game.
The Guardian reported that as a free agent, Alli is not eligible to play for Everton’s U21 team. As a result, Everton manager Sean Dyche has revealed that the club will arrange “special games” or fitness tests to evaluate Alli’s readiness for a return to action.
Alli is open to joining other clubs during the summer transfer window, but he prefers to stay at Everton and try to revive his career. The club has shown consistent support for him, and there is a positive relationship between Alli and manager Dyche.
In early 2022, Tottenham sold Alli to Everton, when his form had already declined. Struggling to secure a regular starting spot at Everton, Alli was loaned to Besiktas in Turkey, but the move didn’t bring the expected turnaround. Alli scored only three goals in 15 appearances for Besiktas and returned to Everton early.
Alli has been sidelined with a groin injury since March last year, undergoing surgery in January 2024. He has hardly participated in high-level competition since then. Now, he’s working hard to pass the upcoming tests and secure his future at Everton.
