Following this development, Sterling’s agency released a statement, urging Chelsea to provide a reasonable explanation.

The statement read: “Raheem Sterling has 3 years remaining on his contract with Chelsea. He returned from his vacation two weeks early to train individually in England, having a positive pre-season under the new manager, building a good working relationship.”

“As always, he is committed to giving his best on the pitch for Chelsea Football Club and its highly respected fans, and, given his inclusion in the club’s official pre-match material this week, we also expected Raheem to feature in some capacity this weekend.

“As his team, we have been in active dialogue with Chelsea Football Club about Raheem’s future at the club and have been given assurances. Therefore, we would like the club to clarify the current situation to us.”

Rumors had been circulating about Sterling’s potential transfer away from Chelsea this summer. The Blues had also been in talks with Juventus regarding a potential swap deal involving Sterling and Federico Chiesa, but the transfer failed due to the large discrepancy in wages.

Sterling’s absence from the squad today has further clouded his future at Chelsea.
